Hello everybody, welcome back to another episode. My name is Ty Nelson, your host and today we have another amazing guest. This is Shelby Constant. She is a free spirit, chill, go with the flow, very smiley, happy go lucky human. She is ‘The Artist’here on board of the Valiant Lady part of this contract right now and.Yeah, Shelby is just a chill person. She's the personification of chill. Hello, Shelby. Wow. I'm so tempted to put this like up to my mouth. Just, you know, right around here it works. Case in point. There you go. But, ahwww, thank you, of course. Free spirited, y'all. Yeah. So who are you? If you had to give a bye as a person, Yeah, what would you know? Wow. Like, oh, hey, I'm Shelby, blah, blah, blah. I'm from this place. I think if I were to describe myself, I'd be like yo, I'm shall we? Just like you said, I'm just a vibe. I just like to vibe. Very chill, mellow like. From Orlando so grew up in just like suburbia. And then amongst the theme parks, so that's for like entertainment background started to creep in. But yeah, Shelby is ‘The Artist’ which she can dance, she can move. She's less of a dancer and more leans into her art. So did you do schooling for your art or..? Actually I was started off as a mechanical engineer. Oh, Work! Yeah then big, big rotation. Yeah, like I was doing engineering for a couple years. OK, And when nobody knew what they were doing and I realized I'm not much of number cruncher, but I love to build stuff with my hands and stuff. So I like, I love art and everything. I just switched to my minor at the time which was digital media.Yeah. And so just cranked it through, finished it. Clearly not doing what I study now. That's alright and that's OK. But yeah, so I did that, but it let me kind of dabble with like digital arts and I was required to take like an art class and it kind of like… I guess rekindled the flame but I used to like draw and paint all the time and so I ended up painting, drawing at home for fun. And when I saw like the auditions shop here, I was like “Who do I connect with? What is the vibe?” Yo, this is going to throw me off. I know some people were very expressive with their hands, so I totally understand. Can you hear what I'm saying? If you need to rest it there and then it's like. Were you expecting to get more of this role or were you trying to do something different? I honestly shot straight for this role. Okay, yeah, I'm not going to lie, I applied to be a dancer.. cut so she can dance, we can vibe. I'll hype it up a little bit. But definitely like I was really happy when I heard about. 'Cause I had applied and then a year later I got like a call back a year. It took a year. I was literally, I was booking tickets to go to Colombia and lived there for four months. And then I got a call from, I got a call and I was “Me?” like the day that you were booking or because I had a similar story yeah kind of the day I was booking I was booking within that week because I have a really close friend to me he's one of my close friends. Saki. We met like climbing. Shut up. Shout out to Saki bro. He is my inspiration, okay. Yeah I'll shout him out like when you see he just moved to Colombia just just cause, you know, it doesn't have the language. Just decided to move solo and then has met a great community and I'm kind of very inspired by him. But like also like our whole past like stories together. But I was going to go hang out with him and maybe go backpack down South America for a couple months. I can see that for you. Yeah. I don't know if I’d come back. That's alright. That's OK. I think I'd be so happy down there. As dancers, we obviously have a warm up. Is there something that you do creatively to get warmed up and ready in a headspace to create your art? Or is it just kind of like whenever you feel like it, you pull out a canvas and you make it happen? I think the second option sounds about right 'cause I know sometimes I'll look at the canvas and I'll be like “mm…” “I'ma do it tomorrow.” Yeah, that's fine. But then sometimes it just really hits. Like, I painted a picture for someone here on the ship, and it made me, like, really happy to be able to give it to them. And so still waiting. Still waiting to give it to them. But like, sometimes it just hit, like, hits. And when you have, like, that free time, because you know how often we get free time out here on the ship. Yeah. So like, I'll just kind of like, post up at the dock or I'll go up to Athletic Club and I'll just go paint for two hours. Do you want to be a like, a quiet area or do you have music playing? I love busting down EDM music. Yeah, well, I paint. Wow, that's interesting. You think that I'm listening to something calm, you know, something really chill, really mellow. But no.I am raging to Dom Dolla. OK, shout out to Dom Dolla. Shout out friend of the podcast. As Shay would say, very nice, very nice Dom Dolla. We have high clientele friends of podcast here. What's your go to if you have a go to not necessarily style, but what do you like painting the most? Whether it be floral or people or animal or like an art style. I think I like, like colleges. OK. Yeah. So I like, I don't know, just taking random things and making it work together. Like, I made a pair of shoes of like, an octopus eating a bowl of ramen. And then the other pair of shoes was jellyfish sandwiches just floating away. So I just love quirky stuff, you know, or like, I think I really like drawing people, but mostly I like putting things together that, like, might not make sense. Yeah. You actually said your friend inspired you. What has inspired you to get into art? Like, and even dance and just the arts in general. Was there a moment or something that really resonated with you where you were like, “OK, I think I want to try this more.” Yeah. I think it was a long winding road. OK yeah. I was like, I'm never really like on one thing like… I remember specifically, like as a kid, like I would just love to doodle and draw and I would chase, like trace all the pictures. Okay, yeah, do the window thing where you put a coloring sheet backwards and then you just trace it. Yeah. And I was like maybe 10, something like that. And I was like, “this is kinda cool. I like this.” And I would make dioramas all the time as a kid and always just making stuff with my hands. And then I stopped for a long time. Like I didn't paint or draw like through high school or like through the beginning of like my college. And then I was like, “what happened?” Like I think I like drew one thing for a project and then I just got back into it. And then for funsies I took a sculpture class. And I want to say that like that kind of changed. I like work with wood and woodworking. And then when we would build stuff at the theme parks, I used to work as a tech. Oh, so like, OK, yeah. So I was like, I was like, oh, I like this a lot. Just like getting to work with your hands. So I guess like for the art side of it, that's kind of like what led up and I forgot rest of the question. That's OK. Yeah, more so just like what inspired you to get into what you're doing, which is what you've answered. Oh, yeah. Let me ask you this on the in the same vein, is there anyone as a person or a mentor that has inspired you? Is there any advice that they've given you or someone in your life has given you that you follow all the time? I always blank out on these kind of questions. That's OK. But I want to say, like, one of my biggest inspirations is my brother. OK? Yeah. And he's he's my younger brother, but he's like my best friend. Like, you know, it's like second me. But like, slightly more unhinged, but like, also he's just so freaking smart work. Yeah. He's just like, I look up to him a lot because he's such a determined person that like when he sets his mind to something, like he's going to get it done. Yeah. And so like, what? I'm just like. I'll think back to him and, like, everything that he tells me is just like, you know, and how he stays focused or even like, 'cause like, when we live together, like, I just look across and he's just constant crying mode. But he still makes time for like, you know, like friends. And like, he goes salsa and bachata nights twice a week. Yeah, that sounds like so, which I think is adorable, but like, no. He's definitely one of my biggest inspirations in terms of how he like, he's such a also open and like free spirit, but he's also just such warm energy that like, you know, he can welcome anybody into a room and they feel comfortable. Like, yeah, love that man a lot. So I think he would be my biggest inspiration in terms of like. How I want, like people to like, kind of respect and see me and like, he's such a warm energy. You definitely give off that same type of life. Let's go. Period. Yeah, Yeah, yeah. I love your silliness, but you have you have such an inviting nature about you, Like just the way you talk to people the way you like. You're perfect for this job. But just in general, as a human, I think you do a great job of staying authentically yourself and allowing other people to be themselves too. So you're doing great at that. So keep doing that. Appreciate your Ty. Yes ma'am, you too. Thank you. Is there advice you've been given though, specifically, maybe even like a daily mantra or something that stuck with you, that you recall whenever things are going weird? Something that kind of like helps you stay focused, if you will. Focused is not a vocabulary word, Not within my vocabulary. That is what what did it mean? What does focus mean? And you might not have one. It's OK to tell you. It's like it's not a requirement obviously, but if you have anything like if there's something you would share to other people like yo blank, blank, blank. There was honestly like this is just so recent. It might be kind of cheesy, but like there was a sailor that came up to me earlier today. It was just like never stop smiling. You made me feel so welcomed in and like that like I almost cried. I was like wow. But I think. I don't know, like, life goes on. Like, you know, you're gonna hit your rough spots and there's gonna be rough patches, and then it's just, you're gonna have to, like, work your way through it. But like, you'll notice that like, it just goes on and that the world's gonna keep turning. But like, it's just how you approach these situations that might come your way. And so like, I've had some stuff happen in my life where it's just like, OK, like, it really sucks. Yeah. But it's kind of just finding like the light around that and then kind of just moving, not moving past, but learning from. And like, I think I've learned a lot from like people and just being surrounded by it, like good people and surrounding yourself with what you love. Like you don't have to put yourself in situations just because someone wants to like wants you to be there. Like, you know, let's say like basic example of like, you know, “I don't want to go out tonight.” and like everybody wants you to go out and you end up not being happy. Like you put yourself where you.Yeah yeah and you don't necessarily have to wait for people either cuz like I feel like the more you wait for people to come and join you is like it keeps you from shooting from to your goals yeah yeah if you don't put yourself out there first and you're constantly waiting that you have to just kinda like sometimes just push past the fear of like “I have to do this by myself.” and you'll find that you'll meet people of the same mindset and like the same like I'm gonna use vibes a lot, but like same energy and it just kind of like it fuels you more than if you waited for people that might not necessarily be on that same path. Very good. So yeah, you talk about. She's worried about the interviews. I said it's gonna be so good. Everybody, I don't know, interview. No, you're doing great. Everybody has something that they can share. And that's like the goal of this, you know, it's like we all have learned something somewhere. And I think what's nice, this whole. Whole episodes, like the whole episodic series, it's just about community. It's about showing that we all kind of go through similar things. Of course there's peaks and valleys and people go through more severe things or less severe things, but everybody's got something cool that we can learn from. And that's why I love this job too, you know, exactly like you’re working with people and like everybody has something to share I'm not gonna lie as ‘The Artist’ like I have a more like isolated role yeah and like coming into it like I didn't know that like coming into Virgin but like it's also nice because I have like a role where I'm more like one-on-one with sailors and I'll. I'll admit I've cried 3 or 4 times like they’ll tell me their deep past stories and like, people they've lost in their lives and like, you know, stuff like where it's just like it hits 'cause, you know, like, where they're coming from. And sometimes they just need someone to listen. And like, I love being that person where, you know, that they can feel comfortable enough to share that kind of information with. Yeah, listening counts. It's a huge skill, so it’s dope that you've already developed that skill. So silly for the audio listeners. She is doing a fist pump right now. She with her eyes closed. Yeah, yeah, there she goes. So moving on to our dance creation and collaboration. Oh yeah, So Shelby, very silly, very silly individual. And I love that approach. So you don't really consider yourself like a dancer? No, I was not raised a dancer. Yeah, I think my first time playing a sport was maybe middle school, and it was softball and I was terrible at it, but I loved it. But then I ended up like basketball. Found out that I'm more of an independent sport kind of person. So that's where like climbing comes in. Oh yeah, you're a big climber, Big climber. You literally get off in Miami and yeah, climb. I'll literally go running for that gym. Yeah, I'm like, bring my rocks back. Plase.I've been on the ocean too long. I need my mountains. But yeah, sorry, we don't have a lot of those on this ship. Well, no rock climbing in this in this combo we made, but Shelby we did a really good job. What was the song that you chose? We we had a back and forth for a minute. We were going back and forth between Downtown by Macklemore, Ryan Lewis and then Alors on Danse by Stromae, which is like a French art.Is that I freaking love beanie bean bean beanie bean beanie beanie. “Alors on Danse.” That's a good one too. We ended up going with Macklemore’s ‘Downtown’ and even still we we didn't get as much time in as we wanted to cause Shelby wanted to put in the downtown. But we got through the first kind of section and I honestly, I love your, your little freestyle at the beginning. You have to check the video out, obviously, as all things are. All four versions, you know, Yeah, just gonna put them all in. No, no, we'll put the best one.Yeah, but it was so silly. What I appreciate about this one is because you're not necessarily like a trained dancer. What I find is best is just to let people be like, you're like, what if we did this? I'm like, what if we did? Let's do it. That sounds like so much fun. Let's send it. You know, I think this episode will be really nice because it kind of highlights like. The people who can relate that don't consider themselves dancers. Dance is just about having fun. And really, as you're saying, life, life can be about fun. You know, you just smile through it. And if you don't feel like you look great. Like I actually worked with Sara in a contemporary the same day. In a different episode for y'all, but you know, I don't feel confident in that style. But it's still fun to like get up and get moving into creative. That's what it's really all about. So hopefully if you watch this episode, you just see how silly we get. I love Ty's facial expressions whenever I say let's do a cartwheel. Like he's like, we we can do that and we will. Absolutely. I will say she did not do the original idea of the moped that she had. And I loved it. I was gonna be the moped. Yeah. That'll also be an extra credits. Everybody check out the link in the description. That does not exist. Yeah, we didn't get the moped, but we did do pretty much everything else. Yeah. You know the big kick? No, we're just missing the soar scene. Yes, that was gonna. If we did get to the downtown, we would have literally lifted. Y'all would have loved that. It would have been great. Yeah. The whole thing's great, though. Perfect. Yeah. This. It's a much more silly and just theatrical fun one. So again, thank you for it. It's no, I had the most fun I've had like especially with dance classes. But I do find them intimidating. Yeah, yeah. It sometimes is easier when you get the one-on-one time because nobody's moving past you and you're like, yeah, let's go back, let's go. Are you not like, comparing yourself to someone? Like, how can I work with this person? Yeah. And then go from there. And I'll say this too, I feel like for other people that want to get into dance, it's all about this. It's about maybe getting with one other person or even getting in front of a mirror and just doing stuff. Because we made the choreo. If we came back in a couple days into the choreo again, it would be even sharper. It would be even better or whatever. You know, it would be super spicy. And that happens with dance. So like, if you're seeing something, maybe it's like you're looking to do a wedding or you're trying to do impress somebody, start it, start it and then come back. Just send it. Yeah, just send it. Yeah. Don't compare yourself to other people. Just enjoy the process. Even just like dancing in the.Like, I'm not gonna lie, I used to work with Insomniac, OK yeah! And so I performed like as a stilt walker, like on the stages during like, EDC Orlando and Forbidden Kingdom. And like what I tell you, my audition with them, I had no clue. They were gonna put me on a stage in front of all 150 audit. I'm I'm not a dancer even, you know, I blacked out through the whole thing, but you just push through it and I I was so happy like to be able to get the job. But then since then.Like remembering like the song I had from two years ago that they played was ‘Drugs in Amsterdam’ or something. And like every time that comes out, it brings back memories and how I want to like get better as a dancer. And so you kind of see like you'll just record yourself, just do it or dance in the mirror and like get all the sillies out sometimes. And then just really like focus on what you are like, inspired to do.'Cause like then like you start just growing from there. Like, you know me, my initial like go go dance moments was probably me. Just like, hey, hey, hey, Isolate, Isolate, ahh, ahh. And then it becomes like flowy. And then all of a sudden you're dancing with thousands of people. Yeah, yeah. So if you start one way, you could end up dancing in front of thousands. Everybody wants that to happen. Everyone. Oh, how do you want to use your artistry to create change or inspire others? I think with art, I really like that it inspires people. Like sometimes I'll have people come in and they'll in terms of like when working like I've like experienced what I had is like people coming up to me like “I haven't done this in years.” And I'm like, “why not like go order yourself an $8 coloring book.” But like realistically though, but like, it's just it's really inspiring to be able to like rekindle that flame in people. So like want to take on like that art side again. Yeah. And then in terms of like wanting to inspire, like I personally love making like customs for people that like combine things that they love and that they can like to show off and I did a lot of apparel so that people can like, actually be like inspired to wear like what they love. That's cool. Yeah. Yeah. So I like shoes, like for my friends mom, she was a big Harry Potter fan and she was a Gryffindor. So I painted the Gryffindor common room on one. And then I painted her daughter was a what's the one? Hufflepuff. I knew it. There we go. There we go. That's like, it's like the star signs, like a possum or something. Honey badger, honey badger. There we go. Am I? Maybe. Don't kill me. No, no. I loved Harry Potter. Yeah. Only made it book four. I've never read the books, just the movies.I'm not that deep. It's not that deep. I’m not in it like that. But yeah, so her daughter was a huu like a Hufflepuff. So I like painted the. I thought it looked like a possum, so I painted the Honeybadger. That would be amazing if you made that possum instead. That would have been incredible. Be like, look, Hufflepuff. It's just like, girl, what is that? Yeah, is that dead? Is that dead? Is it alive? I don't know. But I think just where it like being able to make stuff for people that like inspires them to just kind of like be them. Like it's pretty cool. And then like with art, just having people be inspired to like kind of just take it on or just like, 'cause it'll be like, I'm not an artist. I'm like, you'll take this, like take this crayons, please, please just take this crayon and paint the wall. And then you'll see like that, you know, slowly, like you start to get more and more immersed into it and. It’s the same with dance And just take that first step. It's the same with dance you just gotta start. And yeah, I feel like that's a that's a common thing for any style of art, Acting, directing, dancing, art like painting, whatever it is. You just gotta start. Like everybody says I'm not that. And it's like exactly have you tried? It goes for everything, 'cause like you don't know until you try exactly, and then you don't know until you try two more times later. No, yeah, you try the first time, it's trash, and then you're like, well, I'm never doing that again. It's like absolutely everything's kind of trash at first. A lot of people say that with climbing. And I'm just like, you know, like, you don't have to be like, I don't have the arm strength. I can't do a pull up. I can't do it. And it doesn't matter. Yeah. Like, climbing is all about just like, getting your body like on the wall and like just trying to go up. But like, and over time, that's when you build technique. That's when you realize it's like, it's not just arm strength. It's like full body. You're maneuvering in the most efficient way possible where you don't use as much like strength and get tired out easy. Or another tip is just your goal is just to find breaks. Is there a certain thing you use like a grip strength thing that you would say “Y'all need to get this.” or do you just free hand it? I mean I love chalk chalk, chalk, regular chalk. My hands are sweaty and clammy, not gonna lie, especially when you're like climbing. So usually use what's at the place or do you have your own chalk that you I have my own gear so I have like my harness. Shoes! To all my climbers out there. There you go. Who may be out there listening to this right now or who wants to get into it? Get yourself a pair of shoes. It changes the game completely. I have a question. Yeah. How do you feel about toe shoes? Oh, like the sneakers? I've never tried them. I've been open to it just so I can just like go and wiggle my toes in front of people. Not for the advantage of climbing just so I can show people my feet. Yeah, I think they're good for like, hiking. I wanna say I had a friend who was helping me through some stuff. And he was telling me that the toe shoes might actually be, beneficial just for, like, your foot and how like, your foot's naturally supposed to be versus how. And shoes, like your toes are kind of, like, crushed together, Right? That's apparently not good. No. But he's a big supporter of toe shoes, and he was telling me all about them. So I would try them. OK. Yeah. But I think it would be good for like hiking and like running around, like climbing. Not too sure. I want to see you get this toe shoes and then we'll film you climbing and you can tell if it's a better advantage or not. Well, Shelby, that's pretty much it. Wow. I know. So everybody, before we go anywhere, shall we? Where can people find you? What's your Instagram? Do you have an art thing? And where are you going next? Where can people find you in art? Where can people contact you even? Yeah, no. Well, if you want to follow me, it's @Shelbsconstant that's my Instagram handle or like my main Instagram. So that's where I'll post most of like my adventures and like climbing and like my work yeah, but for I just made a new art Instagram like 3 weeks ago so it's Shelby under score the artist and I want to do similar things where like I have paintings that I make for people in the ship. I have a list currently right now that I want to make for people and just be able to be like, hey, here's a piece of me like and like a little memory from like your time here on the ship. So that's my art Instagram. So that's probably what it'll be. OK. So yeah, follow that and see the progression of all the cool things that Shelby makes here on board the Valiant Lady, thank you once again for watching another incredible episode. I want to give a huge thank you to Shelby for coming out. Thank you very much. All the vibes. That was a great vibe. All the vibes. So now we're going to say the dance floor at the same time. I'm going to lead it in and I think you're going to know when. OK, we'll find out. You ready? Here we go. Once again, thanks for joining. I am your host Ty Nelson. Again, huge thank you to Shelby and we hope that you found inspiration in today's episode and you enjoy the dance that you get to watch. Hopefully it leads you one day out on TheDanceFloor! Yeah. Oh my God. Woo, let's go.Oh, you know what? The artist that's cute. The artist. Should I put it flowy? Sure it works for you. Artist. I think ours is. I don't know. They don't know about it, Yeah.
